5 Craft Brews to Try This Summer

Possibly the only way to assuage the heat of a New York summer is with 76 ounces of beer. Fortunately, the 4th Annual New York Brewfest -- where 100 craft breweries poured samples of over 300 of their finest beers -- took place last weekend. I braced the masses of thirsty untamed frat boys and ultraviolet radiation to gulp through as many 4-ounce samples as possible. While there was certainly no shortage of mediocre offerings (demonstrated by the small foamy lakes grazing the park where people had dumped a displeasing brew), these ones stood out as perfect summer quenchers: Read More>

More Central New York restaurants are jumping on the sustainability wagon

Ever travel to Baltimore for one of Maryland’s famed crab cakes? Or down south for some authentic barbecue? Maybe even to Italy for the freshest, most delicious pasta you’ll ever eat? If the answer is yes, you know there’s no shame in going great distances for fantastic food. But what about the other way around?
Head to a national chain restaurant and chances are, your dinner has traveled 3,000-plus miles before hitting your plate. To prepare for the journey, your vegetables were likely sprayed with chemicals, your meat injected with hormones and other preservatives. The food was then packed onto a gas-guzzling truck, possibly for a cross-country trip that took several days or even weeks. Oh, and when your bill comes, expect your money to travel as well, so it can be used to support big-box warehouses and distributors—with only a tiny fraction staying in good ol’ Central New York. Steven T. Winston and Los Blancos are about to release an eight-song acoustic CD.
Los Blancos bass player/singer/songwriter Steven T. Winston just shared some very good news with me.
The Syracuse roots music foursome is just about ready to drop a new CD.
Winston says the genesis of the eight-song collection relates to the band's Sunday brunch shows at Empire Brewing Company in Armory Square.
Fans frequently ask them if the songs they're hearing are available on CD.
Because it's an acoustic set, the answer has always been no. So Winston, Colin Aberdeen, Mark Nanni and Mark Tiffault recently laid down eight songs at Lorenzo studios. MORE> |
Beer and Loathing on the Distribution Trail

Theoretically, that brew you just finished should have traveled a pretty straightforward route from the brewery to your glass. Shipped from the brewer who created it, the beer was warehoused by a middleman, who then loaded it onto a truck and delivered it to a retailer, where it eventually found its way onto the shelf or into your local pub. THE STATE OF NEW YORK BREWING
Putting craft brewers on the map
Time was, not so long ago, that many people pictured an American brewery as a large urban factory producing a generic mass-market product. Beer was offered up as a lubricant to good times and while many drinkers were loyal to their favorite brands, many also thought: “Beer is beer.”
Times have changed. Look across the United States and you’ll see a new and growing industry of craft brewed beer. About 60 small and mid-sized breweries exist across New York State, distributing worldclass product to enthusiastic and dedicated beer-drinking fans. MORE> |
The Max: Empire Brewing Co. 1/24/2008
SUNDAY BLUES BRUNCH, EMPIRE BREWING CO.
The Max will never forget a sunny Sunday afternoon in Syracuse last spring. A friend's parents were in town and wanted to venture downtown for some lunch and maybe a little shopping.
To Armory Square, thought the Max!
So off we went to Walton Street, where parking was plentiful and people were not. Shop after shop, restaurant after restaurant, doors were closed up tight, not to be heard from again until Monday morning. Where was everyone? There we were trying to do good by the little guy and it felt as though there were signs on the sidewalk that read, "Try Carousel Center instead." MORE> |

If you have ever enjoyed a well-made, flavorful craft beer, at home or in your favorite multi-tap bar, you owe a debt to Michael Jackson.
No, not Michael Jackson the pop star. Michael Jackson, the "Beer Hunter," author of "The Beer Companion," "The World Guide to Beer," and numerous other guides, books and articles that educated the world to the joys of good beer (and, later, single malt Scotch). MORE> |
THE EMPIRE (BREWING CO.) STRIKES BACK 5/30/2007
DON CAZENTRE STAFF WRITER - The Post-Standard
It sounds like a movie title: The Empire Returns!
Yes, beer fans, the award-winning Empire Brewing Co. brewpub in Armory Square is coming back (as soon as the state signs off the on the liquor license). The anticipated opening is June 5. If you liked the old Empire, which opened in 1994 and closed in 2003, you're going to like this one. The interior looks nearly identical and the menu will feature all the popular favorites from the past, topped off by the Big Easy Gumbo. MORE> |
